How a catalogue works in South Africa

Here the word is "catalogue", and retailers announce their offers in one. The same names turn up in the same searches: "checkers catalogue specials this week", "house and home catalogue", "builders catalogue 2026". A catalogue is not always weekly. Spar's national leaflet currently runs from 19 October to 8 November 2026, Russells and MTN cover several weeks, and OBC says it uploads new specials on the 23rd of each month. AdsSOS collects the scans, so you can see which window you are looking at before you drive anywhere. We list no shelf prices, and all offers belong to the retailers.

The grocery giants and who owns what

Groceries come first. Shoprite Holdings is Africa's largest supermarket retailer, with 3,710 stores across eight countries as of June 2026 and 573 of them franchised. Its two main flagship names are the Shoprite weekly specials and the Checkers specials catalogue, which share one free Xtra Savings card. Pick n Pay, started by Raymond Ackerman in 1967, has Smart Shopper, and it is the majority owner of Boxer. Super Save in Pietermaritzburg is a good example of a regional name that has traded since 1983. Spar works through independent owners who use the brand after joining the SPAR Guild, which is why two Spar stores in different towns can feel quite different.

The Competition Commission once launched an investigation into Pick n Pay, Shoprite/Checkers, Woolworths and Spar, and its concerns included long-term exclusive leases for anchor tenants in shopping centres. That history is the background to why independents and regional names appear in the same catalogue feeds.

Massmart, Pepkor and the wholesale layer

Walmart has wholly owned Massmart since 2022, and Massmart's brands include Game, Builders and Jumbo. You will find the Game catalogue, Builders catalogue and Jumbo catalogue in our listings. The Game page notes a price-match policy at one Giyani branch, so ask in store. A separate category is cash and carry: Africa Cash and Carry in Crown Mines, Johannesburg, publishes weekday and Saturday morning hours, and KIT KAT Cash and Carry has been operating for over 50 years from Pretoria West. Expect trade-style packs and different opening patterns from supermarkets.

Ownership is moving on the furniture side. Shoprite announced in September 2024 that it would sell OK Furniture and House and Home to Pepkor, and the Commission recommended conditional approval. We could not confirm that the sale has completed.

Hardware, the home and the nursery

Hardware is a strong catalogue category. Adendorff tools lists 30 stores, Gelmar hardware counts 50 locations, and MICA member stores number over 160 and are owned by their members. The Babies R Us catalogue is a different animal: a baby retailer with a free Rewards Club and a returns window for sealed items. Search patterns such as "adendorff catalogue 2026 price list" show many shoppers want the PDF, not the page, so we point you to the real source when it exists.

The category hubs

If you know the type of shop but not the name, use a hub. The supermarket catalogue hub has 19 grocery names, the electronics and phones hub covers the networks, HiFi Corp and Hirsch's, and the Home and Garden hub brings furniture, building supply and trade counters together. Other hubs on the site include Health and Beauty, Department Stores and Fashion, Auto, Sports and Leisure and Discount and General Merchandise.

Public holidays and the calendar

South Africa has 12 public holidays. Under the Public Holidays Act a Sunday holiday moves to the Monday, but a Saturday holiday gets no day in lieu. In 2026 that means National Women's Day was observed on Monday 10 August, while Human Rights Day and the Day of Goodwill fall on Saturdays. The holidays still ahead this year are the Day of Reconciliation on Wednesday 16 December and Christmas Day on Friday 25 December. Branch hours around those dates vary by store, and the Sunday notes in our listings run from a few hours to most of the day. Always check the specific branch.

Your rights as a shopper

Section 56 of the Consumer Protection Act gives six months to return defective goods, and EWN reported this July that a store's own damage window cannot override that. It does not turn every regretted purchase into a return, since change-of-mind returns follow the store's policy. The practical habit is simple: keep the receipt, note the catalogue validity dates, and ask the branch about anything that matters to you.
