How a Canadian weekly flyer works

In Canada the word is flyer, and for a lot of households it is still the first thing opened on a Thursday. Retailers publish an edition that runs for about a week, often as a multi-page document with a separate regional version. Metro, for one, states that its flyer runs Thursday to Wednesday. AdsSOS collects those editions in one place. We do not sell anything, and we do not publish prices, so what you find here is a map to the flyers rather than a shopping list.

The grocery sector is under public scrutiny too: the Competition Bureau's 2023 study called for more grocery competition, support for independent and international grocers, and harmonized unit pricing. French matters. In Quebec the same idea is called la circulaire, and Google's suggested searches show shoppers typing "circulaire de la semaine" with Maxi, IGA, Super C and Metro. BMR, Jean Coutu and Brunet get the same bilingual treatment.

Words you will see

Three loyalty names turn up again and again. PC Optimum belongs to Loblaw banners, Scene+ to the Empire group around Sobeys, and Moi to Metro, Jean Coutu and Brunet. They matter because a flyer price is sometimes a member price, and you may need to scan a card before it applies. Price matching is the other term, and it varies a great deal. Walmart ended its Ad Match on 15 October 2020, and NerdWallet's Canadian guide confirms its price matching was discontinued in 2020; Walmart now matches the Walmart.ca price in store, with restrictions. Best Buy publishes a 30-day Low Price Guarantee. The Brick and Leon's both offer a 30-day guarantee of their own.

The big names, and what each one is

Some are everyday general-merchandise stores. Walmart Canada flyer is based in Mississauga and offers 90-day returns with proof of purchase. Others are specialists: Best Buy flyer for electronics, Staples flyer for office supplies, with the Bureau en Gros banner in Quebec, and Leon's flyer for furniture, a company that started in Welland in 1909.

Hardware has distinct ownership models. Home Hardware flyer is dealer-owned. BMR flyer belongs to the Sollio Cooperative Group in Quebec. Princess Auto flyer is a Winnipeg company known for tools and equipment. Cabelas flyer is an outdoor retailer owned by Bass Pro Shops, with ten Canadian stores listed as of January 2024.

Pharmacies are mostly regional. Jean Coutu flyer and Brunet flyer are both owned by Metro Inc. and use Moi, while London Drugs flyer is a British Columbia company with its own LDExtras program.

Grocery goes well beyond the national names. T&T Supermarket flyer is an Asian supermarket chain owned by Loblaw since 2009. Oceans flyer is a multicultural supermarket whose aisles are organised by country, and Btrust Supermarket flyer has four stores across Ontario and Quebec.

Find your category

If you would rather browse by type, we group stores into six hubs. Start with Supermarkets flyers for the grocery banners, then Electronics flyers for TV and computer shops, and Home and Garden flyers for hardware and furniture. Health and Beauty flyers covers the pharmacy chains, Auto, Sports and Leisure flyers covers outdoor and sporting goods, and Discount and General Merchandise flyers covers the broad-line stores.

The calendar

Flyers follow the year. In late autumn people start searching for Black Friday and, soon after, Boxing Day editions. Staples alone draws queries for both. Back-to-school and spring renovation have their own peaks, and Thanksgiving in October sends many people looking for opening hours.

Holiday opening rules are provincial and sometimes municipal. The Retail Council of Canada notes that Good Friday is a statutory holiday everywhere except Quebec, while in Quebec most retailers are not allowed to open on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day, with municipal exceptions for Easter Sunday. Nova Scotia adds Boxing Day to its list. British Columbia lets retailers open on holidays if they pay employees according to law, and many Ontario municipalities, including Toronto, have by-laws allowing stores to open on statutory holidays. So the sensible habit is to open the flyer, then check the hours of the specific store.

A few polite suggestions

Everything on this site is a pointer to the original flyer. The retailer's own terms always win over our summary.
