How a Kiwi catalogue week works

In New Zealand the word you will hear most is not flyer or circular but mailer, especially for supermarkets. Other retailers say catalogue, and everyone talks about specials. AdsSOS collects the weekly and monthly scans in one place so you can open the one you want and read the dates printed on it. We do not list prices or build product pages; the catalogue is the source, and the retailer has the last word on what is on special.

Supermarket mailers: regional by design

The weekly shop drives most of the traffic. People search for the New World mailer for the South Island or the North Island, the PAK’nSAVE mailer, and the Woolworths catalogue, and the island matters because specials are set regionally. FreshChoice stores is the neighbourhood franchise option, and it joined Everyday Rewards at all of its supermarkets from 20 October 2025. Our supermarkets hub compares all four banners, including the Club+ scheme that replaced Clubcard on 15 June 2026.

The big sheds and the homewares aisle

Home improvement is its own catalogue culture. Bunnings Warehouse and Mitre 10 stores are the names people compare, with Mitre 10 a co-operative of 86 independent, locally owned stores. Briscoes homewares covers homewares, and Farmlands co-op serves the rural customer as a farmer-owned co-operative. The home and garden hub sorts out how they differ and where trade accounts come into play.

Electronics and the technology shop

Technology retailers publish catalogues that people read slowly, usually before a large purchase. Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi and PB Tech all feature here, and price match is the recurring question. Our electronics hub sets out how each one handles it and what the return windows look like.

Department stores, discount, crafts and pharmacy

Beyond those groups are retailers with their own loyal readers. Farmers department store is the long-standing department store, with a free Farmers Club. Kmart NZ is owned by Wesfarmers and operates 26 stores in New Zealand according to Inside Retail in February 2026. Crackerjack variety is a New Zealand family-owned discount variety chain, formerly The Clearance Shed. Spotlight craft sells craft and fabric, and its VIP Club needs an email opt-in for vouchers. Chemist Warehouse is the pharmacy name. Gilmours cash and carry is different again: a trade-only cash and carry for businesses, clubs and charities, with a Buyer’s Guide published every four weeks.

The calendar and the Shop Trading Hours Act

The rhythm of the year is set partly by law. The Shop Trading Hours Act restricts trading on Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Christmas Day and Anzac Day until 1 pm, and councils can adopt an Easter Sunday policy that lets shops in their area open that day. Retailers such as Bunnings, Briscoes and Harvey Norman list those restricted days, and many shoppers search the questions directly, for example whether a store is open on Easter Sunday. Some shop types, including those selling food and household items under conditions, are exempt, so confirm with the store you plan to visit; shoppers also ask about other holidays, such as whether New World is open on Matariki. Black Friday in late November shows up in the electronics and pharmacy queries. We have not verified a fixed sale calendar for any single chain, so treat the dates inside each catalogue as the truth.

Know your rights before you buy

The Consumer Guarantees Act applies when goods are faulty, regardless of any store warranty, but it does not cover a simple change of mind. Those policies differ widely: Kmart now lists 60 days for change of mind under a policy effective April 2026, Farmlands 30 days, Spotlight 28 days, Chemist Warehouse 7 days with medicines excluded. Read the specific store page rather than assuming, and keep proof of purchase.
