Who is in this group, and who is not alike

This page gathers the grocery chains whose weekly flyers we scan across Canada, and the first thing to say is that they are not one kind of shop. Some are national-scale banners owned by a handful of large companies. Others are a single family's three stores in the Greater Toronto Area, a member-owned co-operative in Alberta, or a multicultural market with aisles organised by country. The Competition Bureau's 2023 grocery study called for more competition, including support for independent grocers and international entrants, and a good share of the flyers below come from three parent companies wearing different banners.

If you are new here, start from the national overview at Canada flyer overview, then come back to pick a banner.

The Loblaw family of banners

Loblaw Companies owns a long list of names, and the flyer you open depends largely on your province. In Quebec you will meet Maxi flyer and Provigo flyer. In Ontario the same parent runs No Frills flyer, Zehrs flyer, Fortinos flyer and Valu Mart flyer, while Atlantic Superstore flyer covers New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Loblaws flyer itself is a banner with just 51 locations as of 2026, and Real Canadian Superstore flyer is the big-box version. T&T, the Asian supermarket chain, has also belonged to Loblaw since July 2009.

The common thread is PC Optimum: member prices need a card scan, and 1,000 points equal a dollar, redeemable from 10,000. Maxi adds its own promise, Imbattable. Point final., which matches competitors' advertised prices, though the conditions are store-specific and one press test is our only source for them.

Sobeys, Empire and the Scene+ banners

Empire Company Limited is the second large parent. Sobeys flyer is the namesake, with Scene+ replacing Air Miles in 2022. Its Verified Prices refund the difference as Scene+ points on icon items. FreshCo flyer is the Ontario discount arm, and it also pairs Scene+ with app offers. Safeway flyer is mostly Western Canada, Thrifty Foods flyer is the Vancouver Island and BC name, Farm Boy flyer is Ontario fresh-food territory, and Foodland flyer carries Scene+ in Ontario. Longo's flyer is 51 percent Empire and 49 percent Longo family, with its own Thank You Rewards.

Metro Inc. and the Moi program

Metro Inc. runs Metro flyer, Food Basics flyer and Super C flyer. They share Moi, which is also the pharmacy program at Jean Coutu and Brunet. Metro states its flyer runs Thursday to Wednesday. A third-party guide lists Metro as not offering price matching, which is a reason to compare flyers rather than count on an adjustment at the till.

Independents, co-ops and specialists

Not everything here is a chain. Calgary Co-op flyer works through a one-dollar lifetime membership and an annual patronage return, which in 2025 was 1 percent on food and 3 percent on pharmacy. Co-op Food flyer is a different story: local member-owned co-ops sharing a supplier federation, so rewards depend on your town. Save on foods flyer runs on More Rewards. Bulk Barn flyer sells by weight and, per third-party sources, gives seniors a Wednesday discount. In Greater Toronto, Ample Food Market flyer has three stores and emails its weekly flyer, Btrust Supermarket flyer and Oceans flyer serve multicultural shoppers, and Starsky flyer has just three stores. In Quebec, Pa Supermarché flyer accepts one supplier coupon per product. Also in this hub: IGA flyer, Independent Grocer flyer, Quality Foods flyer, Highland Farms flyer, Coppas Fresh Market flyer and M&M Food Market flyer, which is mainly a frozen-food format and sits here only loosely.

Loyalty cards decide more than the flyer does

Three loyalty programs sort most of the market: PC Optimum for Loblaw banners, Scene+ for Empire banners, and Moi for Metro. Quality Foods and Save on foods sit on More Rewards. If you shop at more than one parent company, the card you hold changes which flyer price you actually get, so read the fine print on each page before you plan a trip around a headline offer.

Timing, Sundays and holidays

Most flyers turn over on Thursday, and the editions we list usually begin that day. Google's suggested searches show how people use that rhythm: queries like "flyer next week" and "flyer starting Thursday" appear for Food Basics, Real Canadian Superstore and others. Hours differ by province. The Retail Council of Canada says most Quebec retailers are not allowed to open on Easter Sunday and Christmas Day, with municipal exceptions for Easter Sunday. Its Nova Scotia list adds Boxing Day. In British Columbia retailers can open on holidays if they pay employees according to law, and many Ontario municipalities, Toronto included, have by-laws allowing stores to open on statutory holidays. Searches such as "is Loblaws open on Easter Sunday" and "are grocery stores open on Thanksgiving" are common for good reason: check your own city.

Practical tactics

What shoppers search for

Real queries are plain: cheapest supermarket, price match, a banner plus a city. For general-merchandise stores that also sell food, see Discount and General Merchandise flyers.
