Who Smith's actually is

Smith's is a regional supermarket chain headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah, and it's owned by Kroger, which bought it in 1998 after Fred Meyer held it for a short stretch in 1997 and 1998. According to Wikipedia, the stores sit in Arizona, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming. The same article counts roughly 141 Smith's Food and Drug stores plus 18 larger Smith's Marketplace stores, so if your local store looks bigger than the usual supermarket, that's probably why.

The history is a nice small-town story. Lorenzo Smith opened a little dry goods store in Brigham City, Utah, in 1911. It later became Smith's Super Market, went public in 1989 and grew by buying Smitty's Supermarkets in 1996. Today the shelves carry plenty of Kroger-owned store brands, including Simple Truth, Private Selection and Home Chef. If you know those labels from another Kroger banner, they'll look familiar here.

Smith's Rewards, fuel points and digital coupons

Savings at Smith's start with the free Smith's Rewards account. Members get the sale prices shown in the ad and can earn fuel points. Exact earning rates are tied to promotional windows, so read the numbers on the live page. A Kroger-family promotion page we saw in search results says digital coupons are clipped in the app or online, can be redeemed up to five times, and get more personal as you shop. Fuel points can be redeemed at Smith's fuel centers and participating stations, up to a dollar off per gallon.

One tip: clip the coupons first, then scan your Rewards number or phone at checkout. That order keeps the digital savings from being missed at the register. The fuel program has been around a long time. KSL reported on a version of it back in 2011, and the rules have changed since, so treat old blog posts about earning rates with caution. Smith's return policy: what the rules say

A lot of people search "can you return food to Smiths," and the answer comes from the Kroger family policy posted on the Smith's site. Items can come back within 30 days of purchase, and refunds go to the original form of payment when you've got the receipt, paper or digital. Without a receipt you'll typically get store credit as a gift card when the total is over ten dollars, and cash for smaller amounts. Anything bought with WIC can be swapped only for the exact same item. That policy carries an effective date of July 13, 2020 in the version we saw, so glance at the current page before a big return.

Smith's hours, holidays and Thanksgiving

Searches such as "what time does Smith's close" and "is Smith's open on Thanksgiving" are common, but hours vary store by store, and the store locator is the only dependable answer. For the holiday question: a Deseret News roundup from November 2022 listed Smith's/Kroger among the grocers that opened on Thanksgiving. Pharmacy counters often keep shorter hours than the main store, so check the pharmacy line separately before you plan a prescription pickup on a holiday.

Ways to shop Smith's without wandering the aisles

Smith's runs fuel centers in the Northwest and Southwest, according to Wikipedia, and many stores include pharmacies. Common questions people type include whether Smith's takes Apple Pay and whether it sells alcohol. Alcohol sales rules depend on state law, and Utah, Nevada and Arizona all treat them differently, so what's on the shelf depends on where you live.
